South Carolina Priorities
We're committed as an Administration to the ideals of limited government and personal freedom. One of the best ways to promote these ideas, we think, is by advocating for lower taxes and lower government spending.
We are committed to reforming South Carolina’s governmental structure. Our position is this: South Carolina’s outdated system of government allows too many decisions to be made with no accountability.
We have a vision to make south carolina a better place to work and live. Part of this vision involves improving the soil conditions for economic growth. We passed market-based coastal wind insurance reforms hailed as a model for the country by the Wall Street Journal, and we were successful in getting legislation passed aimed at reducing workers’ compensation premiums.
We strive as an Administration to make South Carolina a better place to live. The quality of life offered by this state - the state’s unique look and feel - is essential in differentiating South Carolina from other economies around the nation and globe. It’s for that reason that we successfully urged the Legislature to pass the Priority Investment Act, a bill (now a law) requiring local governments communicate with one another when investing in infrastructure like roads, water lines, and sewer lines - thus helping to reduce sprawl and use tax dollars on infrastructure more wisely.
We’re convinced of the need to break the status quo in public education.
A small but significant step towards new thinking on education was represented by the passage in 2007 of the Virtual Schools Act, providing students across the state with more learning options. In 2006 we also helped jumpstart the first-in-the-nation statewide charter school district.
